Beware!

Jul 172010

I received a call this week from a man asking if I was aware that there were problems with my Internet. Thank goodness, I was immediately on my guard and queried the call saying that I would get my son to get back to him (I asked for his email address but he said he didn’t have one!?). I checked the phone number he gave on Google and apparently it WAS a scam, so beware!

OUT AND ABOUT IN LONDON

Jul 142010

Earlier this week, together with my daughter, we spent the morning at Selfridges with the lovely New York photographer Ari Seth Cohen where we visited his Exhibition of photos of “The wise and silver-haired set”. I’m proud to say that a photo of yours truly took pride of place in his Collection!

See the latest post in Ari’s “Advanced Style” Blog!

Now Ari is off to Paris and I wish him good luck with his exciting work!

VOG snapped for Selfridges “The Forever Shop”

Jul 102010

You can read Fashionista’s article about Selfridges’ latest shop which will present those styles and products which have stood the test of time here. A great idea, and one I’m sure many fellow VOGs will applaud!

Of more personal interest, you will also read that the New York photographer Ari Seth Cohen is in London right now, commissioned by Selfridges, to photograph shoppers who have also passed the test of time – see his Advanced Style Blog. Having read so far, it will probably come as no surprise to you that Ari stopped yours truly while out shopping and has added her to his gallery – and he’s now also a friend on Facebook and Twitter!

You can also read more about Ari’s exploits in the “That’s not my age” Blog here and see other photos, including this elegant 96-year-old gentleman who dresses up every day to be out-and-about on the streets at Spitalfields Market.

In Memory of Stella

Jun 132010

Our very good friend Stella passed away on Friday 11th June, 2010. She will always be in our hearts and so very sadly missed – one of the “Golden Girls”.

Rita, Zena and families and all the many friends in whose hearts she remains.

Fixing a Fuse by Remote Control

May 182010

I received an emergency call from one of my children the other night at midnight – she was in the loo and the lights suddenly went out! Dog barking in the garden, and husband away on business, she immediately thought there was an intruder in the house. Who does she phone at this late hour, but her mum!

Vodable - cave - 27-08-2007 - 11h05Voice-a-trembling, she tells her tale of woe. As she was upstairs at the time and there was a light downstairs I realized it was a fuse. I told her that she would have to go down and check the fusebox under the stairs.

I told her to check if one switch was pointing differently from the others.

Exploring an ideaPresto! And all the lights came on, panic over, all was well.

Still Alive and Well

May 182010

I was just done hibernating for the winter when the Iceland Ash arrived! No great plans right now though I’m learning to keep up with my Facebook friends and also in real life with the Golden Girls – though none of them are really online yet!

Taking the Hint

Nov 62009

About Windows Live Messenger’s popup:

“Never mind, I just keep telling it to go away all the time – but you’d have thought it would have taken the hint.”

The Beauty of Aging

Jan 22009

Adapted from The Woman’s Book of Spirit, by Susan Patton Thoele (Conari Press, 2006).

We live in a youth-worshipping society, but we are beginning to glean wisdom from indigenous and Eastern cultures who revere their elders. Age can bring a beautiful patina to the soul.

Here is a quotable quote about older women to send to all your friends, and a story about seeing a Grandmother Rock that was a huge inspiration to this author.

Those who choose to look at what they have gained from advancing years, rather than what they lose, generally have a lustrous heart and a gleam in their eye. Ideally, the experiences accrued throughout the years bring increased wisdom and instill an inner security that allows us to speak our truth fearlessly and act from an unshakeable sense of integrity. Here is great quote:

“Time and trouble will tame an advanced young woman, but an advanced old woman is uncontrollable by any earthly force.”
–Dorothy Sayers

The best computer advice

Dec 142007

I used to worry about all the “serious error” messages from my computer, writing them down and not knowing what to do until I could get advice from someone.

It really was too much for a V.O.G.

Oops

Then my son gave me the following advice, and since then I have slept a lot easier:

“If it tells you off, turn it off.”

Even my recent transition to Windows Vista hasn’t been too bad thanks to this advice.

Late night

Alzheimer’s Test?

Jul 72007

I was at the doctors this week for a check-up and he asked me to remind him of the medication I am taking. I rattled off all the different pills I have to take and afterwards I realised that this was his way of testing me, for he already had all these details on my medical records which he had in front of him! Is this some kind of test for Alzheimers?
